Hiring a Contractor

What To Look For

  • A well established roofing contractor with a permanent place of business, telephone number;
  • Tax ID Number,
  • proof of Workers' Compensation Insurance;
  • General Liability Insurance;
  • A local Business License;
  • Experience and knowledge, familiar with all type of roofs and different products;
  • Commitment to quality and safety;
  • Ask for and get a written proposal, it should list specifically work to be performed and list materials included
  • Check the Better Business Bureau or the State Contractors Board;
  • Ask for Three Client References.
  • Ask for their supplier credit reference
  • Ask if they have operated under an different Name or License number
  • Never pay more than 10% of total contract price in advance!
  • Don’t pay in cash!
Why Do I Need A Licensed Contractor?
  • It's the Law!  California Contractor Law states anybody performing work above $500 is required to have a valid Contractors License.
  • Hiring an Unlicensed Contractor Can spell Trouble. Where will the contractor be be if your roof develops problems?
  • Are they credit worthy?  Your property is at risk to Liens and Foreclosure if your contractor fails to pay his Suppliers and Subcontractor. 
  • You can be held liable if the employee of the unlicensed contractor is injured while on your property or if your neighbors’ property is damaged, not to mention damage to your own property caused by an Unlicensed or Uninsured Contractor.
  • Will an Unlicensed Contractor have the experience and training necessary to do the job correctly?
  • A Licensed Contractor will be knowledgeable of current permit and code requirements.
  • Remember, a guarantee is only as good as the contractor who writes it!
